If you’re from our area, you undoubtedly are familiar with New Skete ‘Heavenly Cheesecakes’! They are made by the nuns at the New Skete Bakery within the walls of their monastery just over the border in Cambridge NY. The cheesecakes are, in actual fact ‘heavenly’ and we’re so pleased to offer them here at Manchester House of Pizza! Stop in and try a slice. You’ll be transported to another world by the taste!
Here’s a bit more about New Skete from the website –
About the Monks: In 1966 a small group of Byzantine-Rite Franciscans established a monastic community in northwestern Pennsylvania. Today, we reside in Cambridge, NY, close to the southern Vermont border. It is here that we have, for more than 40 years, nurtured our deep love for and spiritual connection with dogs, and developed our expertise in dog training and breeding.
About the Nuns: In 1969, inspired by a vision of contemporary monastic life, a group of seven Poor Clares from Indiana settled in Cambridge, NY. With the monks’ help, we purchased a small farm house a few miles from the monks’ monastery, and built our own monastery across the road from the farm house. Thirteen years later, we added a bakery to our home where, today, we produce our gourmet cheesecakes.
About the Companions: In 1983 three married couples and two widows, who had been attending services regularly at New Skete, petitioned and became a third community. With help from the monks, we built our monastic residence, Emmaus House, about .25 mile from the monks’ monastery. Some of us held jobs outside the monastery while others worked within in various capacities including developing and creating dog products, calligraphy, iconography, and meditation gardens surrounding Emmaus House. Today our monastery is transitioning into additional guest space for visitors to New Skete.
